Responsible by practice.

AI for biology is dual-use: the capability that speeds up research could also be misused. XS1 Biosciences develops it with attention to dual-use research of concern, and orients its work toward beneficial and defensive applications.

01Four layers of practice

No single safeguard. Layers of them.

From what a model learns to who can use it and how, each layer catches what the one before it might miss.

Illustrative

Requests travel inward, layer by layer

  1. Layer 1

    Data choices

What goes into training is chosen with dual-use risk in mind. Data whose main contribution would be harmful capability can be left out of training altogether.

  2. Layer 2

    Evaluation before release

Models are evaluated before they are made available to anyone. That includes internal safety testing of our own biology models for misuse risk.

  3. Layer 3

    Controlled, trusted access

Higher-capability models are made available through controlled, trusted access to qualified research partners, rather than released openly.

  4. Layer 4

    Use-case review and monitoring

Each partner and use case is reviewed before access is granted. Use is monitored within the agreed terms, and access can be withdrawn.

02Limits

What XS1 Biosciences does not take on.

These limits apply to every project and every partner, whoever asks.

  • Work aimed at creating or enhancing biological threats.
  • Open release of higher-capability models.
  • Projects or partners that do not pass a responsible-science review.

03In step with the field

Practice that keeps moving.

Biosecurity practice for AI is developing quickly. XS1 Biosciences follows community work on responsible AI for protein design, on genome-editing models, and on screening of nucleic acid synthesis orders, and updates its own practice as that work develops.

Questions about how we work?

Partners can ask about our responsible-science practice in an initial conversation; qualified partners receive more detail afterwards.
